I've painted my boat, one good coat of epoxy primer. Few runs. Sanded them out. Painted with Serman William Jet-Glo one good coat of grey. Mixed some more paint (I bought at aircraft liquedation, something wrong with paint. All kinds of different colors and sags all to hell. Sand back down to first grey coat. Have a Gal of Met Blue Imron. Spray it with it, 2 coats. But can still see light spots though it. Have to buy a Gal to match $171. Paint it with 2 more coats, Blue good. Also bought a gal of Imron clear. Spray the whole gal on last night. Looks ok, but really bad orange peel. Been sanding on it with 1500 and buffing, but it's so bad I think I will have to shoot it again with clear. I can't get Imron here, have to drive 45 mi to get it, but I have some Jet-Glo urathan clear base coat. Should I use it? or sand an buff the imron as shinny as I can and call it good or should I wait and get some more imron clear. Any tips on making the clear coat glossy like if should be would be a help.<br /><br />Frustrated, Ben

A few years back we started putting the clean in the paint for the last coat, not on the last coat. It seems (here anyway) that the sun attacked the clearcoat and made it shrink and peel. Especially the Imron stuff.<br /><br />Good luck!

I think I would try sanding with 600 then step up thru the grades until i got to 1500, starting with 1500 is too slow. test a spot and see how it goes.. I think you will have to sand it down anyhow if you want to recoat it with clear. I have used imron on a few boats over the years and have found it to be very forgiving as far as sanding and buffing it. Im not familiar with jet-glow but if it is not a 2 part paint, it probably is not as hard a finish as the imron.....good luck......

Sorry to hear of all your troubles, Now we see why these paints, as expensive as they are, should be applied by profesionals. Imron buffs VERY hard, You would be better off just sanding with 600 and recoating with imron. I hope you didnt take my advice on this, becaus if you did you miss understood me.<br /><br />You wasted money using imron as the basecoat if you were going to overcoat with imron anyway, If you took the paint shops advice, they sold you a bill of goods! Youve spent nearly three times what you should have. Now that you have spent so much money on imron, it would be silly to topcoat it with an infierior product. What a shame.

Re: Imron - Painting Hell

I'm no Professional, that's for sure. I have found that if I sand the orange peel with 800, then with 1500 then with 2000, and then buff it with rubbing compound. I have a nice finish. I will post some pics when done, have you guys critique it. As for the money I think I'm ahead. I bought litaraly thousands of dollars of paint at the aircraft auction for $20.00, I bought the whole room for that amount! The only reason I bought the gallon of Imron was to match the gallon I already had, and still have enough left over to paint the trailer, I think. I have gallons upon gallons of this stuff - <br /><br /> http://www2.sherwin-williams.com/aerospace/acryglo.asp <br /><br />and even more of this<br /><br /> http://www2.sherwin-williams.com/aerospace/jetglo.asp <br /><br />I also have shelfs of Reducer, activator, thinner, etc. For this stuff and Imron. Just don't have a lot of Imron in one color. At this auction I also picked up the sand paper, etc. At pennies on the dollar.<br /><br />Just want to plead my case that I'm not an idiot. Well no more then anyone who thinks about fixing up an old boat.<br /><br />My original question was more about technique, then economics.<br /><br />Over all I learned something on this project, and any suggestions on buffing out the clear coat with less labor would be great!<br /><br />Don't be afraid to call me an idiot in the future, it may be the only way of saving me from some costly mistakes!<br /><br />Thanks<br />Ben

One thing I forgot to add about this Jet-Glo stuff is it is Polyurethan simalar to Imron, Its mixed the same 3:1 like Imron, and has the same instructions on the can. It must be good stuff if they paint million dollar aircraft with it. I was an aircraft mechanic for 8 years, while I never painted a whole aircraft I did paint many repairs and small parts. I love Imron, I've painted helicopter main rotor blades with it. As you know they spin so fast you can't see them, through dust and sand, and it takes a really long time to wear it down. I can't think of a better test for paint. I think that maybe this Jet-Glo it is simialar if not Imron, with Sherman-Williams lable over the Du-Pont......... Maybe... I don't know......

Sounds like you have it under control, when you are done buffing, give it a final machine polishing with 3M finesit compound and a new foam pad. It will look like a million.

Nothing wrong with Sherwin Williams paint. They give the best warranties in the industry and back it up in writing. I've used their paints on everything but cars and had excellent results.

Re: Imron - Painting Hell

Ok, Since you guys are on the subject of repainting, I have a few questions:<br /><br />Starting with an old ugly finish Bayliner 2750 Ciera Sunbridge, Someone hand-brushed a blue color over the factory burgundy gelcoat strip. The rest of the boat is white. Many layers of hand-brushed anti fouling paint greenish-blue on bottom. I first need to repair some cracks and chips and etc.. but after that I was wanting to repaint entire boat gloss white, including the bottom. Can someone give me a good step-by-step? <br />What should I start out with? Sanding the entire factory finish with 220? Rotary electric sander, palm sander? Hand sand? (hope not, big boat) Primer? Have gravity-feed sprayer. Was hopeing to use single stage paint, but can mix if ness. Brand of paint? Sanding between coats? Clear coat ness? <br /><br />Any help is appreciated.<br /><br />Jim

Re: Imron - Painting Hell

speakerdude. If is difficult to achieve the "gloss white" on the bottom as bottom paints are not glossy. If you use a topside paint that is glossy the manufacturers will warn against using it on the bottom due to blistering problems. I was in the EXACT same position as you until a couple of weeks ago. I have not used this product yet but I have ordered it and should get it today. It is called Signature Finish. It can be used above and below the water line for a glossy finish that will not blister and peel. It's not real cheap. Approx $360 for 3 coats on my 14 footer. Alot of the info is not on the website. I had to call to get most questions answered. I haven't painted a boat before and they are open for 9-9 7 days to answer your questions while you are painting. OH, and, they claim the paint will fill spider cracks.
