I recently bought a used boat and it has a Merc 3.0L I/O that has been fairly well maintained. I decided to check a few things out to make sure all was well (slight bogging problem) and decided to clean the fuel filter in the carb.
The filter had a lot of crap in it so I cleaned it all out and am ready to reinstall. I noticed in the manual it says that there are 2 gaskets, one big and one small. I only have one flat gasket (big one) and need to know whether or not I really need the small one. Are these o rings or actual gaskets?
Another point is that it recommends a thread locker on all threads, my threads were pretty clean so I don't think it had them on it. I don't think it will hurt anything so I will use threadlocker on these. Any suggestions on a good one to use?
My dealer looked up the part numbers and the big gasket has a part # but the little one is part of a complete rebuild kit. Is this correct or can I find the little one separate? Anyone have correct part numbers for what I need? It is the 43mm carb.
And finally, the large butterfly plate at the top of the carb has 2 screws that seem to hold it in place. The plate is loose and easily moves back and forth. Should this be tightened or is this normal?
Thanks for any help offered. I haven't worked on a carb in many years so I need to get the rust out! LOL
