In Line Pump vs. vacuum pump

Is there anything wrong with hooking up an in line pump to one of those old compression style Johnson motors. I've seen alot of posts about converting them over to a pump that seems like a lot of work. Which involves a vacuum style Mukumi pump.

I would rather get an Inline 12 Volt Low Pressure pump and just hook it up. Seems alot easier. And still cheap.

Anything thoughts or concerns?

They can be converted to a regular E/J fuel pump pretty sure there is a procedure here perhaps in a sticky at the top of the page. The Pressure systems also work fine if you have the tank and connector the rest is available fairly reasonable.
The connector is expensive but can be repaired.

Well i have one of those old tanks. and the connector. however it isnt working very well. im not sure what is happening but it seems to be putting gas through the air line as well.

so i'd rather convert it to a fuel pump. does anybody know what kind of psi that a pump should have on a 1954 Johnson Seahorse CD-10 5.5hp? Im looking at some inline low pressure pumps that have a psi rating of 1.5-4psi and i want to make sure that is low or high enough, from my understanding it would need to be low so as not to strain the pump and burn it out.

thanks for the link.

however that did not answer my question. i know that you can do that other pump system, i am wondering what would be wrong with hooking up an inline fuel pump and run it off a 12volt battery. just seems easier to me.

The pressure tank supplies approx 4psi to the carburetor.

You would need a regulator to cut the pump on and off with the engine, which is why they don't use then on outboards as a rule. Using the pulse from the piston to drive the pump is simple and self regulating.

ok, but if i had a pump that had a rating of 1.5-4psi than what would be the difference from a pressurized tank?

The pressure tank gets it's pressure from the running engine, so when the engine is off, the pressure goes down. There is no technical reason not to use an electric pump as long as you can regulate it so you don't turn it into a hazard.

This discussion has raised its head many times on this forum.

has it? i tried searching for it, i must have been typing in the wrong thing. What i was thinking was putting a switch in between the battery and the pump so i could turn it off when the engine is off. Would that be enough? It sounds like a lot of work, but where i work i have more ease of access of hooking up the pump this way rather than using a mukumi pump with the vacuum system.

Search "electric fuel pump".

Ideally any regulator should be automatic, so that if the engine dies, the pump stops too.
