to start off me and my fieancs' (forgive spellingplease) we are planning out our wedding one of my "assignments was to work on the music side of this. We are not hiring a d j for this and will be using music form my lap top. We have the music for the cermony, the cake cutting, our fist dance, back ground music for the dinner taken care of, heck we even have the "party music" selected. The issue we are running into is coming up with 3 songs the first 2 being the father daughter dance songs. I say 2 here cuz as she look at it she has 2 dads. fist being her biolocigal dad and second being step dad that has been there for her just like her dad. We are also trying to come up with some song ideas for the mother son dance as well

any help here will be greatly appreciated

Steven Curtis Chapman's "Cinderella" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nrWMBC6yoME) would be one of my choices for the Father/Daughter dance.

Other choices:
Louden Wainwrigth III's "Daughter"
Point of Grace "King of the World"
Paul Simon "Father and Daughter"
Stevie Wonder "Isn't She Lovely"
James Taylor "You've Got a Friend"
Lynn Leonti/Jim McShane "A Father Daughter Wedding Song"
The Carpenters "Close to You"
Celin Deon "Because You Loved Me"
Bob Carlisle "Butterfly Kisses"

Do you need any more?

Those all call for a waltz, I think.

I don't know if it is the correct title, but the recurring line is "Daddy's little girl" and it starts out, "You're the spirit of Christmas, my star on the tree . . . . ."

Scarlet Ribbons.

Lara's theme from Dr. Shivago.

Any one of several Strauss waltzes should do for the Mom and groom dance.

Dang! I get misty just thinking about it.

"Run Around Sue"
"Let's Get It On"
"Send In The Clowns"
"Just A Gigalo"
"The Lady Is A Tramp"
"The Party's Over"
"Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For"
"You've Lost That Loving Feeling"
"Love Stinks"
"Please Release Me"
"Papa Don't Preach (I'm Keeping My Baby)"

Re: in need of a little help......looking for song ideas for wedding

hi.....

I was a professional disc jockey for 30 years.....schools.....night clubs.....radio.....and of course......weddings....

art has some good suggestions.....wonderful world was a very common choice for the father daughter dance. three times a lady was also a good first dance.....but i has now been moved to one of the two following the first dance.

May I suggest something?.........get a pro DJ.

The reasons are....

crowd motivation
crowd reading.
energy speed correlation.
proper timing of music played.
proper dance music played.
proper guest /opposite family mingling.

Take away any one of the six points.....and you have a ho hum celebration. a weak dance floor. and guests that leave early.
as well......if the males sit at a table and drink.... and the wrong kind of music is played.....fights will start......yes...even at a wedding.

A laptop cannot read the crowd.
Even if a pro dj picked the music for the laptop.....chances are it would fail.
the reason being, to properly make a good time.....the dj has to read the crowd...know what they want to hear.....and play it in a way that builds energy and keeps the people motivated.
3 incorrect choices in a row.....and the party dies.
a lap top cannot re energise the crowd, nor can it design a programme to make the people dance.
music that is great to listen to.....is not necessarily good to dance to......
for example.......one of the most requested songs at a wedding is "Hey Jude" by the Beatles. great song....cant dance to it. clears the floor every time.
once the floor is cleared......how do you get the people back up?.....let the lap top play another 7 minit song? you will feel the energy drain out of the room faster then 7 foot waves will swamp your row boat !

A true pro. will know how to avoid those situations....and play the kind of music everybody likes. and everybody will have a good time.

just a quick tip....if you do decide to go DJ......get proper recent references.....no longer than six months old.....a good DJ will work 2 nights a week at minimum.

+1 for what Oops said...

Yes it will cost more for a pro DJ, but having been to a few weddings where various solutions for music was used, I can tell you the ones that were DJ'd by amateurs or iTunes were let downs for excitement.

How did you get your ammeters to do this? I have asked...even begged my ammeters and multimeters to do this and they ignored me! I even went as far as to ask my battery charger for some help and got nothing! You're a lucky man!

:D:D

Juss' havin' fun...

Fluke's new model OU812 has an auto ranging DJ setting that's just horrible, especially for the price you pay.... :D

My spell checker has also been doing some funky things lately... ;)

Re: in need of a little help......looking for song ideas for wedding

see what i mean?.....

ok.....(thanks for the link LT) ....this is exactally what i was talking about in reguards to reading a crowd....

this is a fantastic song.......daddys little girl....the mills bros did it as well,,,,,,big hit....every body over the age of 45 knows it....and loves it.

what happens if the crowd is 25????....you missed them totally....(lets say for example that we were not using this song as a first three, but it is on the computer play list for the night) .....you come out of madonna's holiday......the dance floor is packed....and this song comes on...your toast. ....that fast.

now.........same two songs.......lets say a dj is playing.......... he comes out of madonna's holiday ....stops the song cold and asks every father in the room to go get his little girl and bring her to the floor......then the song starts.......people start crying.....camera bulbs flash.....and a memory is created.

that is the difference between a dj and a lap top.

Kinda like polyester resin and epoxy aye! They both work but one is always stronger :D

Re: in need of a little help......looking for song ideas for wedding

One wedding that comes to mind was DJ'd by some friend of a friend's son who did it on the side with a laptop, Mic, and an OK set of speakers...

The guy had absolutely no clue about how everything should flow. He was commanding everybody around like a drill Sargent on a PA when different aspects of the wedding were supposed to take place (absolutely no people/crowd skills), plus his music selection sucked and was ill timed. This is the wedding that we went to where they ran out of food after only 1/2-3/4 of the people were served their first plate, so you can imagine the budget for the DJ.

I believe several of the people in the crowd commented on how they wanted to go up and take a swing at the DJ with the way he was speaking to all of us.... :D

Not saying this will happen at the OP's wedding, but even with a guy who is supposed to have some experience, it was a bummer.

I like the DJ's that bring props like funny hat's, glasses, or clothes for people to wear while dancing during the informal songs. Certainly seems to raise the spirits of everybody when they see uncle Bob dancing around in a Viking helmet, or the strait laced brides father cutting a rug with huge sunglasses on. ;)

Re: in need of a little help......looking for song ideas for wedding

great help guys ...........she will be going through them in the morning and i am currently going through some now

oops.....how is that limo for the water going?????? in an ideal world i would do the d j service deal but right now we can not do to cuz the ones in the area are going for the 800$ - $1200 for the night (dam i am in the wrong business) now with that being said if something comes up and we can swing it we defianally will as it would have many other benifates as well.

a little more back ground.........i would have to say that about 75% of our guests are older then us and we dont really plan on them sticking around much after the dinner any ways. we are looking at about 150 ppl showing. now if we was 10 years younger and in the prime of our party years then ya i would strive a little harder to get the all out party scene going for the night or until we are shut down. this is going to be a simple non formal wedding with the cermony (hopefully) held out doors at a lake side pavilion were the lake is visable through the trees. and reception is held on the same grounds where we are catering it.

with keeping everything on such a low budget is going to allow for a better honey moon (we hope) and hope for not a all night ordeal......l..thanks again for your help

Re: in need of a little help......looking for song ideas for wedding

give you all a little update.......... After having a dinner with the maid of honor we was informed that her and the rest of the bridal party are going together and getting us a d j for the reception. Come to find out she knows a guy that is trying to get started in the business and is looking to get his name out, so that reallly helped out

to give you all an idea what songs we have chosen so far and where we are still stuck on

first dance.... Soulmate ..... Josh Turner
father daughter 1 Butterfly Kisses ....Bob Carlisle
faterh daughter 2 My Little Girl .....Tim McGraw
she is thinking about swapping one of them out with Daddy's Hands by Holly Dunn
mother son Angles Among Us ..... Alabama
cake cutting Sugar Shack.....The Fireballs
the garter toss...... i have a few in mind but not set on any yet please give me your thought here
the boque toss ....... sounds like maybe ...... all the single ladies (i forget who sings it, it use to be one of her favorate songs) but she hass also mention "another one bites the bust by Queen
we are stuck on the entrance song (please comment on your suggestions)

as for dinner music goes ....... we talked to hte kids piano teacher and he is going to bring an electric version over (for ovious reasons) and him and a good friend of his are foing to play piano and sax for us.We informed them that all we wanted was good calm music. He said that they can take care of that
