I have a 1984 Evinrude 15 HP outboard with 50 hours (yes 50) on it that hasn't been used since 1989. What are your suggestions to bring it back to life? It has been stored inside.
First buy a service manual..Before you do ANYTHING else, replace the water pumps impeller.... Fresh spark plugs are next.. Then I would try to start it.. Eventhough it may start and run, more than likely you will need to rebuild the carburator since gasoline leaves a varnish on the inside of the small passages inside the carb.. The carb on that motor is very simple and is quite easy to rebuild as long as you have a rebuild kit and a service manual to guide you...
you should also greese all the fittings and waist two cans of wd40 on the motor, use the wd40 as a cleaner. poor some two cycle oul into the cylanders too, and let sit for a day. then try firing it up... it might take a while and smoke like **** , but at least it's lubed!
