in throttle handle gear shift problem: Mercury 9.9HP, 4-stroke, 2009

the in throttle handle gear shift recently got stuck. The handle has the reverse forward gear integrated on this particular 9.9HP, 4-stroke model from Mercury. So I took it to the shop and supposedly they fixed it by replacing a cable and bending a rod or something like that. It cost me $300. Now the same thing keeps happening again and I am tired going back since the first time around they got the FW and REV mixed up and it still was handling roughly so I had been there a 2nd time already. Besides asking for money back which I may still do but it's a pain and really wastes a lot of time going back and forth with the engine so I am going to try fix this myself. I read somewhere this may be a common problem with in throttle handle gear shifts on this model. Can someone give me a few clues as how to go about this? I use it on a West Marine 12ft inflatable that we take camping...

Hi there, sounds like you may want to buy yourself a service manual before digging in to deep. If you post your engine serial number, we'll see if we can find you the correct part number for the service manual for your engine model to take the guess work out of it if you'd like.

I saw Mercury sells an owners manual and a service book, looks like they are generic to all (4-stroke outboards)?

I can't the correct year/model on this site...Mercury offers an owners hand book and a service manual but they are quite expensive> They also look like they are generic manuals:

The correct OEM service manual part number for your engine model is 90-892248R01

And the correct operation manual is part number 90-8M0055688 superseded from 90-10241090 SN# 0R270500 & Up

You can usually find a good deal searching the part numbers.

Also, you may want to call or email Mercruiser customer support with you serial number to make sure there are no service bulletins out about the issue you are having here.

You can get the needed info for you motor at, Boatinfo - Mercury Service Manual for 8-9,9 hp
This is a online manual and it might take sometime to download. hope this helps.
