Re: inboard power or outboard power

Rediculous question as written. Are you talking ease of maintenance, cost of maintenance, frequency of maintenance, preventive maintenance, or what. The performance question is also far to vague to expect any useful responses. One one hand you can have a boat (inboard or outboard) that is an outright rocket but it requires constant tinkering. On the other hand both can perform to the owners expectation and require only routine preventive maintenance. Think about what you are trying to achieve and then be specific when posting polls.

While UIS is correct I'll take a little stab at it. Same boat, same horsepower, both stock: The outboard will be faster, require less maintenance and the new ones will probably get as good or better fuel efficiency. My .02 and I own I/Os . . .

I agree with Upinsmoke. The poll needs to be MUCH more specific to be meaningful.

Kelly Cook

I posted before I read the poll. Poll is screwy.

The post asks one question, the poll two entirely different questions.

Outboard power gives you about 10 more square feet of deck space, too.

Re: inboard power or outboard power

Still meaningless. Power to weight ratio varies all over the map and can't be answered except "generally". Many four strokes are very close in weight to their two stroke counterparts. But then there are the Verado's. WOT throttle is also meaningless. If all one is looking for is WOT RPM pick the engine that winds the highest (that won't be an inboard). It means nothing and might in fact be slower than a motor whose WOT recommendation is 500 RPM less. To get meaningful data (to the pollster) one should specify conditions (type of boat, length, beam, useage, etc). Then ask what type of power you (the responder) would pick. Then ask additional questions to help determine reasons (weight, fuel economy, noise, etc). Off-shore/inland use is another consideration. Woody -- if you are simply doing research -- its flawed. If you intend to buy a boat based on your poll results you will likely be disappointed. Please don't tell us this is part of college-level course work. I'm being brutally honest here. I hate polls -- especially political polls because most are poorly thought out or are presented with a pre-determined outcome.

Re: inboard power or outboard power

I Will clarify As I am dyslexic I will try to be more specific what I am trying to say is that you have a boat hull you have the option of having outboard power inboard power. Which one will give me more performance out of the new 2stroke outboards and the 4 strokes that will be a rocket in the water going very fast and only require routine manianance. Would a inboard engine give me better performance.

What would accelerate faster a inboard or outboard to be much more specific a Campion 565 there are several options 225 inboard or 175 outboard.

A diesel engine is an option. I however I am looking for top end speed and good acceleration.
what engine would be best 2 stroke outboard. 4 stroke outboard or petrol inboard or diesel inboard.

Sorry for the vauge poll

Re: inboard power or outboard power

If all you are concerned about is acceleration, top speed and maintenance, I absolutely vote outboard. The fact is that the best horsepower to weight ratio product will have the best performance for the same bhp if it is correctly rated at the same place (propshaft) on identical hulls. The lightest combo today on the higher ratings are two cycles, but the 4 cycles are pretty close; within around 100 lbs. They argue a lot about maintenance in the OB Sections above between the 4 Cycles and the 2 Cycles, but the combination of an outdrive and an automotive engine is probably the worst. True inboards are decent on maintenance, but have the slowest top speed numbers by a lot. Diesel will be the worst performer, but best on fuel.

Again, if you are comparing equal horsepower at the prop-shaft, the OBs are gonna be fastest. If the option is a 225 I/O vs. a 175 OB it will be a close race on top speed. with an edge possibly going to the I/O. If it is a straight inboard or v-drive, the OB will win in a race.

Thankyou for the reply I looks as though a 2 stroke O/B will be best I will have a look at the japanise engines

...ahhh maybe an Evinrude E-tech instead? It's a two stroke with all the advantages of a 4 stroke and the 2 stroke!

I agree with Cobra. Would be my first choice too . . . Weight, maintenance and fuel efficiency winner.
