Inboard with prop pocket to outboard?

Im almost ready to splash my Hydra Sport rebuild and I’m already considering my next project. Has anyone ever converted an inboard single screw with prop pocket to an outboard on a bracket? I’m looking at a 24 Topaz center console. I posted on the Facebook Topaz page and was pretty much accused of blasphemy. Thoughts?

Will the pocket cause handling or cavitation issues or will it actually help channel water to the prop? I’ve heard both opinions. My reason for wanting to convert is twofold. 1. I think it would help with top speed - a sbc seems to only cruise around 20 knots in that boat 2. I like the idea of adding a stand-up head in the console.

I don't think the prop pocket would be an issue. I would think the main factor would be how far back you place the outboard. There are tunnel hull designs that are for outboards to run in shallow water so I don't see much of a difference between that and the prop pocket. Worst case you may need to carry the pocket contour from the transom along the bracket to the outboard.

The transom will likely need to be reinforced to hold a bracket, so I could probably adjust as needed.

Most of these boats were either single SBC or diesel and I understand they had weight added at the transom to improve running attributes. If you cut the 100 or so pounds of lead out of the back and added a modern big single (300 or so) I would think it would run pretty nice. I suppose a jackplate could also be installed to find the right height if needed. I am curious if moving weight back would be a problem?

The only thing I can think of is moving the weight back will change the attitude the boat naturally will take on the water. But if the outboard weighs less then what you take out it could balance out.

And yes, you will most likely need to rework the transom to handle the outboard. I believe straight inboards transfer power through the mounts on the transmission and motor and not at the transom like an outboard or an I/O.
