My friend's boat. A 2002 Super Air Nautique with a 5.8 PCM, v-drive.
We were out having a good ol time. Came off plane to pick up a boarder, turned around and gave it throttle and RMPs topped out around 2000(ish) and very little power. Started pulling plug wires at the distributor to see if we could isolate the problem. Lost 4 cylinders, three on the starbord, 1 on port. Opened distributor cap, everything looks fine (new last season as well as plugs, wires, and new fuel filter).
7 days later... sparks at the distributor at all wires, sparks at plugs in all cylinders... but still only firing 4 of eight cylinders. Fuel pressure within spec. The tech we talked to a Nautique thought it might be the low-pressure fuel pump that feeds the high-pressure fuel pump, but this was rulled out by the fuel pressure test.
Bring it back out to the water to do some test under load... it starts running fine. Get up on step, back off, and the problem is back.
Any ideas? He brought the boat to the tech (5 hours away). I was just wondering if any of you had any idea before we heard from him.
