I had a sea trial yesterday on a 280 Sundancer with 4.3 L MPI Mercruisers. At WOT the engine just barely hit 4400 RPM. I have SS 17 pitch props called "Avengers". I am not sure of the diameter but they look smaller than previous boats I have owned of similiar size. The surveyor thought the boat would perform better with a larger diameter and lower piched prop to achieve a higher RPM at WOT. He also noted a little caviation which he thought changing the might help as well. Any suggestions for a better prop size for this boat. Top speed is not as important to me as getting out of the hole as soon as possibile.

Avenger is Michigan Wheel Propellers . . . some of them are really small, like 13" diameter. So, yes check the diameter and try a bigger prop.

I agree usually larger diameter with a heavier boat. Also would be good to have the present wot rpm and speed,by gps if possible.
year of your rig would help as well look for the gear ratio on the leg near the top.
