I have a 1988 25HP Evinrude.
Is there an easy way to increase it's performance? For example would I notice any difference if I started using supreme gas instead of regular gas? Would it be more responsive or have a bit more get up and go?
The motor is running fine, just curious if there is anyhing I can do to improve the power.

Thanks,
Paul

Re: Increasing Performance

Higher octane will not make any difference in performance.

Re: Increasing Performance

On a stock motor the performance may decrease. Your combustion temps will increase for sure and thats not good.

Re: Increasing Performance

Propping and trimming are things that can make a difference in performance. I used to have a 15 Evinrude that was a little slow. I went with a larger prop and got another 2-3 mph.

Good luck.

Re: Increasing Performance

Hi Springbok,
The easiest, safest and least expensive way to increase performance of your 25 is to first remove the hood. Then place the hood on a 35hp. Now your motor will run like a 35...

All kidding aside, there is generally very little you can do to increase performance beyond what the motor was designed to do. HOWEVER, there is a lot you can do to make sure you're getting all 25 of those designed-in ponies. Most of it revolves around set-up, which includes propeller choice, motor angle, weight distribution in the boat, and motor height. Making sure the boat's bottom is clean, straight and true also makes a difference.

As a for instance, using a GPS, my 15-foot runabout with a 75 and carting 2 passengers will run about 30 knots with the motor at even to negative trim angle. Trim the motor out a bit and it'll pick up to about 33 knots. ALL we did was change the motor angle and picked up a 10% gain in speed! Not saying your own rig will respond the same way, but through experimenting you can certainly pick up a little here and a little there and pretty soon you've got a noticeable boost!

The best part is you MUST go for boat rides to accomplish this! Lots of them at that! Change one thing at a time, find out what works, what doesn't work, and have fun!

- Scott

Re: Increasing Performance

Chinewalker has good advice, beat me to the cover exchange. Only other thing you can do is go on a diet. :p :p Only fill the tank half full, Only take out half the lunch you normally take, only take one tackle box instead of four and leave the dog home. :D

What a simple and often ignored piece of advice.
The temptation is to read up about all the possible tuning tips, then put them all into practice at once.

It's a no-no! One thing at a time, then test, is the only sure way.
