Indexing a flywheel on a Merc 402 - Clams??

Gents,

I have a 1974 Mercury 402. I've read the link'n'sync and have gotten up to the timing gun. Which is where I have a problem.

Background: The factory manual calls for sync of the timing trigger to a couple of white dots on the timing plate. I _think_ I can see the dots, but the whole area is pretty worn. Cleaning hasn't helped much. I _think_ it's close, but I'm guessing here.

The manual also calls for two timing points, one at throttle pickup and another at WOT. There are two marked points on the flywheel, about an inch or so apart. One is a doubledot (for the throttle pickup) and the other a vertical line (for WOT). I'm assuming the vertical line is for a 27 deg advance, so I was planning to retard it to bring it to 21 degs, as advised.

Now for my problem...

I've turned the flywheel to get TDC on the top (#1) piston. Checked with a pencil inserted into the spark hole. At TDC, both marks on the flywheel are about one bolt off (45 degs) away from the timing window. (Eight bolts on the flywheel.) That seems wrong.

Flywheel doesn't look like it's been taken off, but it's impossible to tell after 30+ years. Based upon PM's with Laddies, the flywheel appears to be wrong. So it needs to be reindexed.

OK, so how do you reindex a flywheel? Take off the eight inner bolts and twist? Eight outer bolts on the rim? Take the whole flywheel off and move it over a spline?

Help!!
