I have a 1985 omc sea drive with 30 hours on it and have replaced all the maint. items and rebuilt the carbs. the motor runs great and everything seems ok but i dont really trust the guages and alarms being so old and sitting so long. I checked the temp on the outside of the cyl wall by the flywheel and that reads about 204 and the front of the head near the spark plug was about 175. Now for the ? am i checking the temp in the rite place? if not where? and what would the propper temps be at the lowest and the highest?
Any help would be greatly appritiated. i just want to make sure everything is rite before taking it out
Thanks James

Re: infered temp testing

TD says to check for temp. at the top of the head. Works for me. Rick.

by the spark plug? Sorry for the simpleness but I have been an automotive master tech for 28 years and am not sure of terminology of marine outboards. I know what most everything is but not sure whats considered top or bottom. so the temp on the cyl wall by the flywheel should be hotter I gather? Thanks for the input

Check the "top" of the motor as rain would fall down on the head without wind. Go ahead and check it all over. You do not want really any part of the cylinder wall/heads to get above 160. You can use the meter to check what temp the thermostat opens as well trouble shooting hot spots.

Re: infered temp testing

check it at the temp sending unit for the gage if it matches what the gage says your gage is operating correctly.

I check right at the top on the horizontal top side edge (not the face) of the head. The closer I check to the plugs the hotter it is. Rick.

Re: infered temp testing

Well I really appreciate all the advice and I replaced the whole water pump because I really did not want to take any chances and the t stats today and the motor has never shot water out the pee whole like it does now. Even when it was brand new. I have one more issue to deal with and it?s off fishing. I really don?t trust the automatic oil systems on these motors so is there a way to make sure it?s getting enough oil? I know it should smoke some but I hate to chance blowing the motor over some stupid invention that omc came up with. I was just wondering if there was a sure fire way to make sure it?s getting enough oil. Right now I have it running off a portable 6 gal tank with mix in it and bypassed the whole thing all together. I have never had a problem with the auto oil but the boat is 24 yrs old but it only has 30 hours on it. Again thanks for all your help and suggestions

Re: infered temp testing

Well I took her out and got about a quarter mile and the thing took a dump. No fuel. Turns out the pump was still pumping oil but the fuel pump took a crap. I did learn a valuable lesson from my dad. Don?t buy a brand new boat and let it sit and sit. I replaced the fuel pump today and started right up. 364.00 Later. Well I will try it again tomorrow and see if I can?t get a mile out of her this time. Seems I look ahead and fix things that may go wrong and it side swipes me with something else. Oh well. What can you expect from an old boat that has sat. One neat thing though. I got it to turn 31 hours on the boat this trip .lol got lucky and was able to get someone to tow me in but I think I am going to sign up for sea tow.
