Hello, I'm looking at a boat, a 1985 Starfire 245, that is powered by a volvo penta 5.7 with an SX outdrive. Are parts readily available for this model outdrive? Any other pointers on what to look at would be appreciated.
Sounds like a replacement motor/drive. I don't think the SX came out until the joint venture in about 93 or 94. Parts are readily available and they are supposed to be really good drives.
Nope looks like an older style Volvo....they are supposed to be very good drives but make sure that your local service centers work on them because they are completely different than the SX drives...and make sure you can still get parts...if good service is not available I'd pass on the boat....Call around to I/O shops and ask about this...
Beyond the drive...a boat that age can have a LOT of wood rot...be very careful about checking the decks (floor) engine mounts and tramsom....that blue gelcoat looks pretty oxidized and that alone is a lot of work to get looking good....no such thing as a cheap old boat...they all extract their cash out of your wallet sooner or later...
It's at least a 290 outdrive, it has (from what I can tell in that picture) trim cylinders. The drive is great, there are no problems getting parts for them. They are super drives, have owned them myself. It can also be converted to a DuoProp by replacing the lower unit of the drive. Talk about the difference between night and day in that boat ..............
Thanks again for the great feedback. This boat fits my needs, a hardtop that is affordable. I just wanted to confirm that parts were easy to come by. I like the DuoProp idea.
I took another look today, the drive has an SP sticker on the side. I decided to pass on this boat and keep looking. Its been sitting for two years and shows it.
I think you misunderstood me. I like the style of the boat. I have no problem with the outdrive. The boat hasn't been ran for 2+ years. It needs a fair amount of work to get it back on the water. I don't mind doing the work if the price is right. They just want too much $.
I was curious what the SP stood for, it seems obvious now.
