Information Please for the NOVICE Rookie

I've recently acquired this boat that NY states has too many digits in the vin.

How do I identify ? Land boats allow you to break down the vin to identify, is there a way to do it with boats as well?

Model MACKIN
Plastic hull and Built in 1973
MSD 3
Coast guard plate states 8 passengers
IN/OUT drive with a mercruiser and 165 horse in line six

Also try http://www.boathistoryreport.com/ - they might spit out something useful, for free. Keep trying till you get something that looks right.

Or, you could do like Steve Martin in "My Blue Heaven" -

"SS # number please"
"6...5...2...43....4...7..56.....1."
"wait sir, that's one too many"
"Well take off the last number then"
