Information wanted on my Mercury 40hp 4 Cylinder....

hi all - I've just brought a new (to me) 2 stroke mercury. It is an oil injected, 4 cylinder 40hp with trim and tilt. Would be grateful for any information / knowledge you guys may be able to give me on this engine - particularly the year... as close as can be told from the decals and trim etc.. as I dont have the serial number yet...

Also; I'm told the engine has a problem in that it starts and runs fine, but after a few minutes the tell tale and engine start to get hot... any ideas what this could be? is there anything common on these motors?

also; out of interest... do any of you know the value of these once fully up and running well? (not that I'm planning on selling it!)

Welcome aboard.

It does help to have the serial number to dig out the details on the motor.

It could be a weak impeller or bad thermostat if the motor has one.

Got it home today. Had it running - runs really well but as the seller said, the tell tail gets scolding hot after a minuite or so.... I think i'll take the water jacket plates off and have a look whats happening in there along with the leg and swap the impeller.

also I have got a picture of the serial number...
