Hi i have a ingersoll rand 80 gallon 5hp aircompressor that im having issues with. i bought it a few years ago and finally installing it brand new never used. I have 220 runing into my garage and hooked the compressor up with 8 gauge wire..it ran for a few minutes reaching it's required psi so i ran a few air tools and noticed it wasn't kicking back on to refill the tank.. I tinkered with it and can't figure out why it won't turn on anymore.. I cheched the breaker and rest switch but nothing was tripped. Im not a electrician but does anyone know what might be going on?

There is a small plastic cap with a nut in the center (on mine anyway)(mine is a 1990 model and may be much different from yours). Lift it off and you will see a relay that trips on and off when the required pressure is reached. Yours is not connecting when the air pressure drops indicating either a dirty or corroded contact or plugged up pressure line going to the relay.

Call their free call center during the day for help: (800) 866-5457

Ayuh,... How far down do you run it,..?? 80psi,..?? 60psi,..?? 0psi,..??

Follow the wires, they go through the pressure switch...
If there's a problem, it's gotta be There...

Re: ingersoll rand air compressor

i have it set up so it starts to fill at 60 psi and stops at 130 psi.. Im pretty sure it's an electrical issue now.. I was messing around with it in the garage and it started back up again but it shut off again so i released some of the air well below the 60 psi mark and didn't start up again. I'm pretty sure it's something with the back box..here's my set up.

Brand new?
Since it did restart while you were fiddling with it..............
Might be a burr somewhere on the contact pieces that are suppose to move when the air psi drops.
When the air is low and it is suppose to kick in, tap the black box block lightly.
See it a tap jars something loose.
But LIGHTLY, just a jiggle worth, don't want to break anything.

Re: ingersoll rand air compressor

The pressure switch on a air compressor is very similart to the pressure switch on my water well system, I have to clean the contacts on the water system about once a year to ensure it continues to work properly.

You should check the contacts to ensure you have continuity through the contacts, they may have corrosion on them, make sure to disconnect the electricity before hand..

Another item I would check is the reset button(circuit breaker) on the compressor, I had one go bad a few years ago, you would tap on it then it would work for a while then stop..
