Ingesting Water Backing up?

I've never heard this before, and never even thought about it with our boat, but while on a friends boat I heard it.

His son was driving, and when he was backing up from the dock, my buddy told him not to go to fast or water could be forced back into the engine through the exhaust. It's a Four Winns Horizon 200 (1999) with a Volvo Penta 5.0L carb and SX drive. No thru-hulls, exhaust onlt exits through the leg.

Is this actually possible and/or something to be worried about?

Ayuh,... While Unlikely, it's entirely Possible,...
Especially with Volvos, they dropped using exhaust Shutters awhile ago...

The older Volvos before the drive design change it happened. The exhaust flappers usually came off and it was possible and did happen, when comming down off plane that the engine woud suck up some water.
I imagine driving backwards it might happen but you would have to go pretty fast.
The SX drive shouldn't have this problem.J
