ingition issues with my 1998 merc4.3

I have issues where it will not start. it cranks kicks over for 5 seconds then dies. I have light at the coil wire that when cranking it blinks on and off and when the engine runs for a sec it stops completely? I put a new coil on it and got the same thing. anybody got any odeas? also how do you get rotor off?

I assume you are talking about spark when you say light and it blinks on and off ?????
Is this a carbed engine or EFI?

yeah I put a test light on it but it would be spark. Its a carb 2 bar not furl inject. ? the rotoe broke off in my hand and I cannot get it off, is there any special way it comes off?

Here is a direct quote from the OEM service manual. Maybe you should think about getting one for your engine.

Remove distributor rotor/sensor wheel assembly
from distributor shaft. Rotor and sensor wheel
are secured to the shaft with Loctite. Use two flat
blade screwdrivers. The screwdrivers are positioned
opposite each other with the blade tips on
the underside of the rotor and sensor wheel assembly.
Make sure blade tips are toward distributor
shaft until they come in contact with shaft. A
downward push on both screwdriver handles at
the same time will pry off rotor/sensor wheel assembly.
The use of torch lamp will also aid in the
removal of the rotor/sensor wheel assembly.

thanks the rotor came right off. now for the bigger problem. i have changed the following; rotor,cap,ingition switch,disconected the tach at the tach and the moror continues to crank...start..putter and die. I had all these issues yesterday end all od a sudden I had running yesterday perfectly. I let it run for about 10-15 minutes throttling up and down with no issues. I turned it off & I tried to start it again and I got the same thing...crank ...start...sputter and die. Any Ideas???

When it starts, does it actually run for 5 seconds, or is it more like 15 to 20 seconds.
Exact information helps here.
