Looked at a boat that someone swithed from points to electronic, and never got the boat the boat running. It would crank, start, but not stay running. Not %100 sure, but if I was to switch back, coil, cap rotor and dist would cover it correct?

Turn the ignition on (engine off), connect a volt meter to the '+' coil terminal. What voltage do you see?

I don't have the boat, it's for sale. I was going to look at it, but I wanted to se about converting it back to it's original ignition before I bothered to look. Thanks though.

Yes, that would cover it.

Re: ingnition swap

Possibly all they did was wire it wrong and the red lead from the module is tied to the coil + instead of the +12 Ignition switched. My guess is that some thing alse is wrong though. The parts you list would cover changing back but not 100% garanteed to fix the problem. My bet is on the starter soleniod or ballast resistor (wire) or its connections.

Might grab this boat just for drive and put either my current motor to the drive, or a different one. hhhhmmmmmmm I hope I can do this before it gets cold!

Re: ingnition swap

Hech, if the boat is good enough for the engine swap, take it and fix the ignition problem and forget the swap. A lot of un-necessary work. Fixing the ignition is WAY easier than swapping the engine. Even better, if the boat is that good to make swapping a good deal, buy the boat for next to nothing letting the current seller tink you need to swap the engine, fix the ignition (complete system cant be more than $150) and sell the boat for a good profit!! With the price of gas 4 banger boats that run have to be selling better than the V8s.

Re: ingnition swap

The switch to electronic ignition should only require removal of the points and the plate they mount to...it's not necessary to replace the distributor, cap, coil or rotor, although the individual doing the conversion may have.

I agree with what the others have said, but here's a few other thoughts...
1. Check to make sure the electronic conversion kit was the right application, for example, if it's Pertronix you can check on-line if the kit matches the engine.
2. Unless the engine is OMC, there's almost nothing that you can make a mistake on because the conversion and wiring is so simple...except for:
- a cut out may be required in the distributor cap for the thicker gauge wire, if not done correctly the distributor could be grounding out if the wire insulation has worn at the point it passes through the distributor
- the timing may not have been properly set, going to the electronic ignition can dramatically change the timing, mine changed 12 degrees. If not re-timed, engine will not run right
- also check the installation of the e-ignition, the magnet that slides over the shaft can be extremely difficult to push on hard enough to bottom out AND it must spin without coming in contact with any other parts within the distributor, but be close enough for conductivity, the manufacturer supplies a gauge for this (its just like setting points).

If the magnet is not securely seated, the rotor rides too high and causes problems on the underside of the cap. All can be resolved without too much effort. In any case, this should not be so problematic that you would abandon as a project boat.

Re: ingnition swap

OK, waiting for the email pics then if I like I'll go tomorrow. He bought it in March, claims he didn't get to work on it much, now wants it out of the driveway for winter.-No-time. Claims he bought it after the previous owner went to electronic. Is electronic that much better? Thanks for the input. Boat is real cheap, less than what a used drive would be, he claims is real good. But then again, if he didn't get it running how good is it........

Re: ingnition swap

BTW, says it fires, but won't stay running, I'm no tech, but that almost sounds like timing to me, that is if it ran OK before ignition swap and carb is OK. I just am hopful that there weren't 30 "other" things were done to try to "fix" and get it idle.....
