I have a 2000 volvo penta 5.7Gs with DP-SM 1.95 out drive. I am reassembling the lower unit of my out drive. I did not replace anything but seals and o-rings. All gears and bearings are good. I am installing the vertical driveshaft. I have seated the driveshaft bearing cup. The workshop manual page 5-21 says that I have to tighten the driveshaft retainer by hand and set the initial rolling torque at 2-4 inch pounds. Then I go on to install the bearing housing and retainer. If i leave the drive shaft retainer at 2-4 inch pounds I am afraid that it will loosen up on its own since it is only hand tight at 2-4 inch pounds. What am I doing wrong?

Not positive on Volvos, but I think you have to use a new nut every time. It say's initial rolling torque? To me that indicates there should be a second step in the process.

Your fine. The Volvo tool for that job is meant to be used by hand. Tool is knurled and has no provisions to use a wrench or breaker bar. Hand tight is enough to get the 2-4 in lbs. any time I have needed more torque to get 2-4 in lbs it was because of a bad bearing. The o-ring that goes around the retainer will hold it from loosening when you put the upper case on the lower case and tighten the bolts.
