I bought an '89 75hp oil injected Mariner on a pontoon from a local boat dealer. He told me to still add about a half pint f oil per 6 gal of gas. Does that mean the oil injection is not working as it should, should I be cocerned? I have only run 2 tanks of gas & the oil tank hasn't gone down much. Should I just keep an eye on it? Last weekend the buzzer went off a couple of times. Thanx!

From the sound of things , you should have the oil pump looked into. Some of those motors have nylon gears on the pump that go bad and will not work as they should. The oil in the tank should go down as the motor is run. Mixing oil to the gas will make the motor smoke more and some dealers tell the customer to mix at a 100 to 1 ratio incase the pump goes bad. Best to play safe and get the oil pump rebuilt rather than having to buy another engine, and alot cheaper. First thing to do if you plan on working on the motor yourself is to buy a OMc manual, that way you will save on repairs as most shops will chargefrom $75 per hr. and up. You can bypass the oil injection and mix 50 to 1 in the tank if you so wish. Not hard to do. Cut the hose from the oil res. to the oil pump and place a plastic T in it, then cut the hose from the oil pump to the fuel pump and plug the end on the fuel pump and put the other end from the oil pump back to the T you just put in. Leave enought oil in the tank so the busser for low oil will not go off.
