Inline 6 carb problem

My inline 6 115Hp only tries to start when I spray some fuel mix into the carbs. Today I gave one of the fuel lines between the carbs a little pinch and gas started shooting out from where the line meets the carb. It was like it was under a lot of pressure. I'm dreading the task of rebuilding these carbs but I'm thinking thats where this is heading.

The question is about the pressure. Is that indicating something is plugged up in the carb? Does each carb have its own pair of cylnders it services? Meaning, If one of the carbs is bad would the other two still fire?

Thanks to reading the hell out of these forums, I have gone from a motor that does absoluting nothing to "almost" starting. Sounds really sweet when it fires too.

Thanks!

Re: Inline 6 carb problem

My son bought a inline 150 last year and it would only start with a pre mix spray in the carbs also until he was told by a old merc pro told him how to start it. First make sure the motor is all the way down then pump bulb until hard then give the bulb 2 or 3 slow hard pumps. Try that see if it will work for you. You have to almost flood some of the old mercs to get them to start. You may also try some seafoam in the fuel to help clean out the fuel supply and carbs that may help it start also. Good Luck, Tim

Re: Inline 6 carb problem

Problem is when I spray some mixture into into the carbs that bit that I spray is all that burns up. Other than what I spray in, I see no signs of fuel in the carbs. The fuel lines seem to be chock full of fuel but that is all.

Lack of fuel definately, I'm sorry to say but you have to rebuild and clean out those carbs, that is the only way, clean the jets with a high pressure air.

Re: Inline 6 carb problem

Is there a special socket or wrench required to pull the carbs on this outboard? The nuts seem impossible to get at because of the way the carbs are curved. I can access them fine but I cant get a socket to sit on them level, so I am afraid I'll strip them.

Thanks for the help,
Mike

Pull the starter and then the bowl covers off the carbs. You can then access them with an open end wrench.

-W

Re: Inline 6 carb problem

Thanks for the info. So instead of taking the carbs off as a whole, I take the bowl covers off first. Also, I cleaned the fuelpump yesterday and it was gunked up with what looked like yellow sandy clayish deposits. I can only imagine what is in the carbs. Bleh.

Re: Inline 6 carb problem

For an extra 2 cents... Here's my start-up procedure on my inline 6.

Trim up all the way to full trailer position.
Pump primer to as hard as I can get it
Trim down to water intake under water.
Crank with full choke
Usually starts but dies again
Setup for high idle in neutral
Start with full choke
Back off the throttle as soon as she starts and get to 1500rpm for warm-up.
After warm-up it's back to normal neutral idle (about 800rpm)
I only do this once a day on the first start.

After that it's as simple as turning the key, usually still with choke. For the record, I've never been able to flood the engine. So don't be afraid of using the choke of primer bulb.

**Update**
I pulled the starter and the bowl covers, and discoverd that the bowls were filled with a dry crunched up cracker like substance. I'm by no means an expert, but I have a feeling This MAY be the problem.
