Are those nipples on the side of the dizzy for shaft lubrication? I had a timing belt break a while back and have since been advised that the dizzy is tight and needs attention. I have never put grease in them the whole time I have had it. (7 years) its only seen the water a dozen times since I bought it..

Re: inline 6 dizzy question

They are for lubrication of the shaft and movement of distributor when accelerating etc. not for the actual bearings that are failing. They do not lubricate the two sealed bearings in the distributor. The distributor must be taken apart and your bearings replaced, they are probably shot and that is why your belt let go.

Re: inline 6 dizzy question

Well I removed the dizzy and then sat down got out my clymer manual expecting to find help. Wrong, they only advise how to remove it. Damn it!
The dizzy appears to be in good condition, the bearings seem to be good. Spins freely not tight in anyway, I wouldn't mind pulling it down and replacing the bearings anyway. Is this basic to pull apart, I don't want to damage it..

Re: inline 6 dizzy question

It is tricky to disasemble the distributor w/o a good service manual. I recommend a factory one. The rotor is very fragile, non removeable and $200 to replace, so don't break it.

I'll put the dizzy back in then. I'll pull it out over winter, when I have the factory manual. I wouldn't mind a new switchbox as well as new trigger. I want reliability!
Thanks for the advice
Cheers..

Good advise chris ,Bearings are tricky to get off without damaging them ,if not done carefully you will dent the center of the sealed bearing or mark the shaft and bearings cost about $60 each.when you do dont get in a rush and read manuel carefully .shaft should spin freely without any tension with the belt removed if not the bearings may need replacing you may want to take it off and clean it up and grease it up.
just my input.

Re: inline 6 dizzy question

Thanks for your input, I was thinking about going the whole way and replacing the things that go in time. New trigger assembly, switchbox, stater, rectifier, New wiring loom and coil. Everything looks so old, like its only a matter time before some else stops working.
Cheers jason..

If you replace those parts it will be costly. Switchboxes don't go bad due to age, like the wiring does. Coils last forever. Rectifiers last forever, unless you burn 'em out. I would replace the wiring and run the rest of the stuff until something breaks. The Dissy wires are a weak spot as well.

Ok, I might just do the leads, loom then. I can only find the replacement leads in a kit, Where you crimp the ends yourself. So far I have have repainted the motor, pulled the rear water jacket off (remove corrosion) and bought new decals off eBay. It's looking pretty smart, I stuffed up on the paint, to many coats to fast. Some cracks etc..
I think the rectifier has been replaced, doesn't look original. Still doesn't charge even after fixing the badly aged wiring to the stator.

Re: inline 6 dizzy question

The bearings for the distributor can be cross matched at any bearing supplier or NAPA for that matter and be had for less than 10 per bearing. I have had issues over the years with the rectifier on two Towers and have replaced them on both motors to solve my tach and charging circuit not working.I did end up with a newer style rectifier that was shaped differently than the original,it did bolt into the existing mount and is supposed to be a stronger unit. So far so good.

You can also use any full wave rectifier 10A or larger. You will need to ground the -DC terminal to the cowling support, to make it work. In the US, a 25A full wave rectifier can be had for about $5, at Radio Shack. I have never had one of those burn out.

Re: inline 6 dizzy question

If you decide to disassemble the distributor it isn't too bad, on the bottom of the distributor there is two lock tabs on the inside of the star, they must be bent inward and down then you can unscrew the bottom (standard thread). The next is taking out the rotor shaft, here's where it is tricky, you must remove the rotor shaft without moving the trigger plate (the plate is a tight fit onto the rotor shaft with an alinement ***) the plate is a tight fit and must stay down between the electromagnet and base of the distributor. If you break that top electromagnet the dist housing is trash (Sierra marine made a change and there are two screws holding the magnet on and a permanent magnet which requires no current). After that everything is fairly simple, keep your parts in order and reverse the procedure on assembly. Buz
