Do most of you guys have an "inline" fuel filter running right before the motor?

Also, the fuel/water seperate filter. How good are these at filtering fuel? Or are they strictly just a fuel/water seperator?

Re: Inline Fuel Filter

Fuel/Water separator's both filter the fuel and separate the water, a lot of newer motors have a filter inside the engine cowling, but it really just replaced the old screen that was on regular fuel pumps on engines without OMS.

I put an additional one in my fuel line right before the connection to the engine, I do not have OMS on my motor, so I have the screen on the fuel pump also, figured it couldn't hurt.

Cory, The water seperators filter fuel quite well. They also seperate the water via gravity. That is, the fuel enters the seperator, and the fuel to the motor is drawn off from the top of the seperator, allowing the water to migrate to the botom of the seperator.

Okay, so my fuel should be filtered fairly well by that and there shouldn't be a need for an inline before the motor then?

It is a Johnson 60 HP (late 80's - early 90's)

Re: Inline Fuel Filter

hey I also have a fuel filter question for ya....running a 2 stroke. can you
use a regular paper inline fuel filter or will it filter out the oil?? I would like
to run a regular clear plastic/paper filter if I can. Thank's!!

Re: Inline Fuel Filter

BigNiner, I would eliminate any aftermarket inline filter, when you install the water seperator. My 150HP Johnny has an OEM screen, which I left in for simplicity.

Paper fuel filters do not usually filter out the oil in a 2 cycle premix. I have never seen a paper filter that could filter out the oil.

if you had such a filter, I doub't the engine would get enough gas to run, due to the resistance of the fine filter mesh.

Re: Inline Fuel Filter

Just curious.............I just had a water/fuel separator/filter installed on my boat this summer. How often should I change it? I will at definitely change it at least at the end of the season, but was wondering if more frequently is needed.

Re: Inline Fuel Filter

Glas, If you boat in salt water, watch the seperator for signs of rust.

I remove and dump mine into a clear container a couple of times a season to check for water buildup. I change it at the end of the season, but with the rust issues, it may be best to dump it at the end of the season and change it at the beginning of the season.
