inline merc distributer test (12footer!)

I read where 12footer said I shouldnt be able to turn the rotor easily when the timing belt is off.<br />this one is very easy to turn, almost ZERO resistance with the dist cap on or off.<br /><br />does this mean the trigger coils are bad?<br /><br />i was given this 1970 800 80HP and I am trying to see if its worth fixing up!

hello<br /> if this is a thunderbolt CD type ign.<br /> the rotor shaft is mounted on ball bearings. it should spin freely with no wobble if the belt is off. its a hall effect type trigger assy. no moving parts other than the rotorshaft.<br /> if it has points you should feel the points riding on the cam <br />good luck and keep posting

hey thanks rodbolt!<br /><br />I removed it and looked it over, there isnt much there to go bad, with an ohmeter set on megaohms I got some readings across the coils.<br /><br />assuming it is a good part, I just re-installed it.<br /><br />its a battery CD distributer, 1970 80HP inline 4.<br />I found a website ( tenkillermarine) that lists a 2.5 VDC output from the switchbox to the trigger, and a 120VAC output to saturate the ignition coil, so I am wiring it all back up and going to turn key on and test for those switchbox outputs.<br /><br />still trying!<br />thanks for the help!
