Hi there!

Just insalled a insanity wakeboard pylon(Ratchet strap type)to my boat.
Its a v hull boat with an mercruiser inboard 4.3 v6 with engine at rear.

Can anyone tell me the best position for the pylon ie. as close to the front as possible or in the middle of the boat??? we have got it mounted towards the rear at the moment but the boat is taking a lot longer to plane. It also seems to have decreased the size of the Wake.

We think we may to have to install some ballast to increase the wake if so what would be better weight on front or rear or both?? :)

Cheers guys

Re: Insanity Pylon!!

So i literally just did this same modification to my 3.0L 180ft Stingray. I bought the iPylon and added 700 lbs of ballast.

I used the pylon without the ballast for a few weekend didn't notice it being harder to plane and i have a lot less HP then you, i only have 135. Maybe we are just popping up faster or something. I have mine positioned right infront of the rear bench which id say is 2/3 the way to the rear.

I went out yesterday with my 700lbs of ballast and i put one 350lbs bag up front and one right in front of the pylon resting up against the rear bench and it was fine, not great but pretty good. I have a new prop on order so i can move both bags to the rear Vdrive compartments. I have to have one up front so i stand a chance of even getting on a plane with all that weight.

All and all i'm very pleased with my iPylon and i just need to move my weight around and reprop to get it perfect (or as close as i can get)

Now is your boat and I/O or an actual inboard? Because triming the engine up will seriously jack your wake up

I pull the person out of the water with the trim all the way down, then instantly trim the motor up as far as i can without starting to porpoise which pushes the rear down and jacks the weight up

Re: Insanity Pylon!!

Hi there Guys thanks for you advise.

Someone told me today to put the pylon as far forward as possible. As for ballast i would like to go for fatsacks but i simply dont have the room.Up the front is fuel tank and the rear bench it normaly ocupied by my 3 year old son.
When the fuel tank is full it planes a bit better but as we burn of the gas it just gets worse,I supose i could but some weight under the dashboard by my feet up front. Would weighting just the frun increase wake size???????

Re: Insanity Pylon!!

See i put the bags infront of the rear bench seat and my adult friends rest their feet on and around them without a problem and the pylon is in the middle so theres plenty of room to the right and left.

My gas tank is in the rear so i put the one up front to counter that weight. I've read but not really seen it on my boat that weight up front will make your wake steaper/more rampy. I've noticed a size increase but that could be because i added weight to the back also.

The pylon goes as far back as possible up against either your motor cover or the front of your rear bench. Putting it anywhere forward and not up against something solid is asking for the bottom to kick out and kill someone in the boat. Read the booklet that came with the pylon maybe?? Also, the pylon will not affect your wake in any way. It weighs a total of maybe 5 lbs and couldn't affect the wake behind a 12' john boat with a 25hp on it.

Hi DB, what would cause the base to kick out and kill someone? (Think about the physics for a minute...) You're pulling backward on the pylon, and the insanity Pylon is secured at the top where you are pulling from, so it makes no sense in physics (as far as I could find) as to why the base would go anywhere. The base is (in terms of physics) a pivoting point, and when you tighten the straps on the Insanity Pylon, that thing is rock solid. I've owned one for years and you can place the base anywhere in the middle of the boat. I think the suggestion of placing it against something is just for making people who don't understand the physics behind it to feel more comfortable. I've tried many differnt places to put the pylon on my boat and it works fine whether it is far back, or next to the driver. Have you seen the insanity pylon in person, or do you own one? Maybe we can compare :)

Also, if you don't have one or seen it in person, I suggest seeing the video on their website for clarification (www.insanitywakeboardpylons.com). I love mine and have some friends that own one as well. We have never had any issues with it.

video of my pylon($80). The only thing to worry about in regards to the base kicking out and killing someone is if the pole is not at a 90 degree angle. As far as where to mount it...I don't believe you will see any difference. Will the boat take longer to plane...possibly since you now have a pulling point 7 feet above the boat versus the ski hooks which are at water level. Just have someone in the front of your boat on takeoff and you will notice a substantial change in planing. Trimming your motor makes a huge difference also. Play around with the trim and have someone sit in the bow.

Re: Insanity Pylon!!

taylorchix28 Is rite!

Im the original poster of this thread. After some thought about the set up of the pylon i come to the conclusion that due to the design of being fixed at the top with straps the bottom has no way of moving. So i have now placed it as far forward as possible.Just in front of the driving seat. This seems to help a lot in the boat planeing.
After aprox 20 pulls it hasnt budged. But i have noticed the pole flexes slightly due to the rear facing straps being longer, but realy is only a slight.
In all it realy is a exellent design that can be set up in less than 10 minuites.

But i do have a confesion that its not a insanity pylon but one iv fabricated myself which is very similar to the insanity pylon exept iy has a one piece pole which is just removeble at the base.Im very happy with it as you would never say it was a Diy job by looking at it. And it only cost about $60 for me to make. Happy Days!!!

I've always liked those instanity pylons. I like the attention to detail, and how all the metal is covered.

A tad pricy for what it is though. I bet they would sell more if they weren't nearly as expensive as a low end tower.

What are they around $600?

EDIT: grammer/mispelling

I think closer to $500. Although I haven't seen an insanity pylon other than video, I like the look of mine better. The big sleeves just make it look bulky. The big advantage though with Insanity is that you can adjust it to any boat. Mine, unfortunately is more restricted due to using nylon coated steel cables versus tow straps at each anchor point. I would like to see/use an insanity pylon to compare.

I guess if a guy planned on getting a different boat or had the resources to use different boats a pylon with tow straps on each anchor would make sense so you wouldn't have to build a new one each time you get a new boat. But I guess for mine, all I would need to do is lengthen the back to nylon ropes to fit a different boat and it would be good to go.

We've been riding our insanity pylon for two seasons now and this is the very first time I've come to terms with the fact the load is not on the pole in any way. You're actually just pulling directly agains the front strap only transferring a small percentage of that force down into the floor. SO.... I retract my first post. And Taylorchix... I hate being proven wrong A-hole:D

I do believe there is a substantial amount of force exerted on the floor. I had the case once where the pole wasn't at a 90 angle and the bottom(which is designed similar to insanity) slid out hitting the legs of a rider who was sitting in the back.

Re: Insanity Pylon!!

I paid 300 for mine, chose the right time and got the ipylon on sale. And i agree that the "attention to detail" is really great. Its 100% stainless steel and the padding is all covered with nylon. I was going to make my own but pipe insulation taped/glued around a piece of pipe just didn't seem as attractive to me. Plus the 3 piece design is sweet because it fits under my seat. I can go from no wakeboard gear at all just cruising with open deck space to a pylon and 700lbs of ballast in 10 mins with a little multi tasking. I pride myself on being a model of versitility. :D haha

Re: Insanity Pylon!!

For those who haven't seen the Insanity pylon close up, the base is padded so it does grip to the floor very well. The pylon does need to be straight up, but as mentioned before, the stress is transferred directly through the top of the pylon to the straps, so there is no need to worry about the base kicking out.

DB, I appreciate your understanding with a hint of humility :)

Also, for those of you who are looking for a deal on the Insanity pylons, I just got signed up as a distributor, so I can start hooking people up with some pretty good discounts! I could probabally sell a 7 foot "original" pylon for about $325, which is 100 bucks off their MSRP. Maybe I'll go and open my own online store :D

I know they are looking for distributors in the US and Canada and so maybe you can also git yourself some for wholesale for you and your buddies! Bigpoppa, you seem familiar enough with their pylon, maybe you should sell them? (worth a call anyways)

Another nice thing about the Insanity brand is that they make everything here in the US in their own shop, and they are the coolest people ever (except for you guys of course). They can make any sort of mod to your pylon including extensions (for extra height), drink holders, custom heights, and so on. So whether you want a 6 foot pylon or a 12 foot pylon with a drink holder and board rack, they seem to have it down to a science.

I'm thinking about the 1 ft extension, i got the 6 ft thinking my 18ft boat would roll to much under tension but its fine. Board rack for the pylon? I want pics. Its crossed my mind but couldn't find a way to make it look slick and still be able to be broken down.

They were in contact with me, but they suddenly stopped communicating with me???
