Inspecting Bearings

I am working on rebuilding a 1994 200 Johnson looper. I am trying to fix it the right way since this is the second time in two years it has been rebuilt. I am nearing the point of putting the case back together, but I wanted a second opinion about my bearings. Both of the center main bearing appear like new, but the lower center main race appears to have slight indentions on one half. You can barely feel them when you run your finger across them. I was told by a reputable shop that I should probably replace them if I can feel them, so I will. But should I also replace the center main bearing on this journal even though it apears like new? Also the rod bearings I took to a mechanic and he said they were fine and didnt need replacing, but the manual says to replace them if they do not appear like new. There are no scratches, pits, flat spots, blue color on any of the needles, but the cages have some black markings on them. I just wanted a second opinion from someone with more experience before it put it back together. I already have pretty much maxed out what I wanted to spend so I dont want to buy a bunch of new bearings, but I am building in hopes of it lasting a long time this time so I would if need be. I attached a pic of all three parts. The rod bearing I took a pic of was the worst marked one I could find. Also I wiped them off with a non-lint free rag, so if you see scratches it is probably lint.

Re: Inspecting Bearings

I'm no expert, but those bearings look fine to me. However, they are technically "contaminated" because you wiped them with a linty rag. I personally would just replace all of them to be on the safe side. Been there and done that with an old ford truck.

Ok. I read somewhere that the bearings were about as hard as they come, so would just replacing the race on that lower center main be ok?

Replace the outer race(sleeve) it is part #049 from promarine. If the block has not had the water mod's I highly suggest you have them done, I have all my customers blocks done. This helps prevent piston dowel pin failure. Also up main jets .002 to cool top of piston. Here is link to tech bulletin and company that does my mod's.

Re: Inspecting Bearings

I had all my machine work done by marfab, including the cooling mod. Would you have more details on the main jets?
