Feeling lucky? Look on the port side of the powerhead. Forward of the second head bolt down, you will see a round boss cast on the block. If you are lucky, it may have a plug screwed in to it. If so, remove the plug, screw in a hose nipple fitting, and you are good to go.

If just a hole with no plug, no problem. Drill through the bottom of the hole, just into the water jacket. STOP drilling when you hit air. If you keep drilling through the cylinder wall---well you get the picture. OK, now tap threads in the hole with a 1/8" NPT (pipe thread) tap. You are now ready for a hose nipple fitting.

Use a fairly small diameter hose, but don't worry about losing too much cooling water. That hole was originally there for water flow to the automatic choke on earlier models.

Awesome. I like that idea.

Does that '64 40 have an electric choke on it?

1964 (electric) has a hot-air heated automatic choke, with electric solenoid booster. Or, more accurately, an electric choke for starting and a hot-air heated automatic warm-up choke.

The hot air comes from a "stove" inside the exhaust manifold. Surprise, they actually worked pretty well.

actually mine just has the hot air choke not electric. which i am changing out to an electric choke as soon as i get my carb rebuild kit ordered just have to wait till after the holidays. i do not have the tube from the exhaust cover to my chocke , instead i have like 4 lines coming off the crankcase and other areas which i dont remeber where at this moment.

it is a electric starting motor . i added a generator to it and will be adding the electric choke soon..

F_R can u show me a picture possibly?

Whatcha got there, a Frankenrude or something? Sounds like you might have a 1963 or earlier, if it has all those (water) lines. 1964-up has a steel pipe between the choke and exhaust covers. And it indeed should have the electric solenoid on it if it is a 1964 Electric start.

All my numbers say its a 64 but someone else before me might have changed the power head on it . Even the welch plug on my motor matches a 64 but who knows

Yea, I would like to know what the typical issue is with the earlier style automatic chokes ('63 and earlier) because both of my Larks with them run fantastic, but the choke just won't open, while it's in the Auto slection. I don't really want to change the carbs out, because the carbs are all in awesome working shape.

What you just said is exactly what the issue is. They choke too much during the warm-up stage. They were that way when brand new. I just told people to put it on automatic for a cold start, then flip it to choke off position. The guy usually wasn't too pleased to hear that after spending bucks for a top of the line motor. Good thing they put those front doors on the hood.

Yea, that's what I noticed too. Maybe the water isn't hot enough at that point to work it correctly. It didn't really appear to be a way of adjusting them either, but I could be wrong. What's funny, samo_ott says that he has a motor with this set up and claims that it works good. Well, fortunately, I didn't spend a lot of bucks on mine, even though I got the top of the line motor :D Yea, I know what you mean about those front doors. LOL I guess a guy could run a choke cable to the motor to open the choke at start up :D

Yep. Or you could put a T in it if you hold onto hope that the choke will work.
