install tilt/trim guage question

hey guys,

i have a tilt n trim gauge but don't have instructions, can i get assistance with the wiring?

i have a 1999 50hp 4 strk merc.

it has the sending unit, im told.

from the control box i use the brown wire, im told.

here is what is on the back if the gauge


L - for the light? +12v?
G - ground?
S - brown wire from control box/sending unit?
I - no idea

i checked the service manual but could not find what i was looking for.

L = the light in the gauge and ties into your navigation/dash lights. Normally this wire is dark blue.

G = Ground, is black and ties into another guages black ground wire. Or you can run a seaparte ground wire if you wish.

S = Sender, this is the input signal from the trim sender. Trim senders are normally brown with a white stripe but there are many variations.

I = Ignition, this is the power to the gauge when the ignition is turned on. The wire color is purple and can be taken from another powered gauge.

As a side note.... Yes you can put power from a red wire (+12v) to the "I" terminal of the gauge for testing before you install it. I don't recommend doing it during the final install since you'll run your battery down over time.
