Installed Fuel/Water Seperator - Now Problems!

Just installed the seperator. Things went fine, but now I can't get the bulb to be firm. No gas is coming through at all. Gas line is fine (the boat's less than a year old), there are no leaks anywhere. The only problem I can see is that, due to the location, I had to put the bulb BEFORE the filter. My mechanic said this works fine, and he's had no problem. Please help, as I have a fishing trip planned on Thursday. Thanks!

bryan,

It shouldn't matter where the bulb is. Are you sure you didn't put the bulb on backwards? It has an arrow on it that points in the diection of fuel flow.

Yeah, South Louisiana's great. Yes, the bulb is fine, and I didn't even have to remove it when putting on the filter. Everything was bulb and after. Do I need to add fuel to the filter to prime it? Right now, it's dry.

bryan,

How many "ports" are in the manifold that the filter attaches to. 2 or 4?

You may be sending the fuel in circles. It has to go somewhere.

There are four. I have the fuel line from tank going to an "in" arrow, and a line from the filter on an "out" arror. The hoses are right next to on another the way I have it set up now. I'm not even getting any gas to the bulb as far as I can tell. I pulled the out line (where fuel will flow from filter to motor), and there is air, so I don't think it's doing circles. Do I need to prime the filter by filling it with gas? Like I said, I'm not even getting gas to the bulb.

I found that on my boat that :) if the bulb is not close to level the oneway valves will not work properly

bryan,

Ocean has a good point. Primer bulbs do not like to be vertical-I don't know if yours is?

Priming (filling) the filter will make no difference since you're not getting fuel to the bulb anyway. I suspect it won't draw because it has nowhere to go.

All the installations I have seen had the hoses on opposite sides of the manifold. You should be able to disconnect everything and blow air through the inlet and see which outlet it exits from.

Try this. Remove the connector from the fuel line to the engine. Your going to squeeze the fuel ball then put your finger on the end of the fuel line trying to pull the fuel up thru the line. If you did not put gas and oil in the water fuel filter you can pull the fuel thru the way I described. You have no fuel in the line. That is why the bulb is not getting hard. Good luck John

Redfish...

If all seems OK, disconnect the fuel line from the motor and put it in a bucket and try to prime the system again. Give the air someplace to go. Are you sure the valves in the primerbulb have not fallen apart?

Jim

Bonitoman, your trick worked. It brought fuel up almost immediately. Thanks, guys, for all your advice. You've come through yet again.

I believe the instructions on the seperator tell you to fill the cartridge before installing. I never had a problem doing it that way. TOMMY :)

Yes, I'm sure. Unfortunately, mine came with no instructions. It is a Mapco unit, and looks quite generic. Hopefully it'll serve it's purpose.

brianredfish,
Next time, crank the engine over and let the fuel pump help the prime. That is how I pull fuel up when the bulb won't prime itself after a filter change. I always mount my bulbs after the primary filter.
