Installed New Outdrive...Loud Squealing Noise when running...

Installed my SE106 drive today, had it hooked up to the muffs checking the shifts. Worked great for a couple minutes, shifted and everything. (Gimbal is 2 years old, put in with new Mercruiser 357 Magnum Engine two summers ago) Then an extremely loud squealing noise came from what I believe to be the engine compartment. Two contributing factors which I haven't seriously looked into yet...

1. It started pouring rain for a few minutes and I had the engine hatch up, could it possibly just be the belt/pullys got wet and was slipping badly.

2. The drive went in fairly snug, while after wrestling with it a while to get the last 1/3 of the splines to feed in, it wasn't extremely difficult to do. Could it be the driveshaft bound up so bad it ruined the gimbal/coupler, and the engine needed to be aligned?

I'm not new to engines/ mechanic work but am new to boats so bear with me!

Thanks for any assistance.

Howdy,

1. Did you install a NEW SEI drive today?

2. Did you align the engine before installing the drive?

And if not,

3. When was the engine aligned last?

It should slide right in pretty easily. but it can be hard if you don't also align the gimbal bearing. You can "move" it around with an alignment tool to get it perfectly "straight" (and aligned with the coupler) .

The squealing is likely the belts if they got wet.

Did you fill the drive with oil?
If it went in that hard you NEED to pull it off and align it before you do damage to your coupler.

The engine was aligned last two years ago when I put a brand new 357 Mercruiser in. Yes it was a brand new SEI drive.

I did not line up the gimbal with an alignment tool before install either which I'm sure made it sligtly more difficult. And lastley, yes there is oil in the drive.

My vote is on the belts for the squealing............

Have you started it since?

I would suggest you pull the drive and start the engine again to see if the squealing goes away. Then invest in an alignment tool (they are not terribly expensive) and check your alignment. That really needs to be done. It is a simple thing that can save you a lot of time and money down the road. (If it isn't already too late).

Advice on removing the drive if its stuck on there good? Judging by the amount of wrestling I had to do to put it on, its not going to just fall into my arms, and I doubt a slight up and down drop will not do the trick.

Thanks again,

You can use the trim rams to push it off after removing the six nuts and making sure the drive is in forward gear.

Re: Installed New Outdrive...Loud Squealing Noise when running...

Finally got a chance to look things over (when it wasnt the middle of the night and pouring rain) and the circulating pump impeller actually disintigrated and locked the pully up...so thats not a big deal.

Per everyones advice I'm probably going to try and pull the drive off tonight and align the engine anyway, as it seems everyone reccomends it.

Thanks for all the input!
