Yeh i have a feeling you screwed something up in the lower unit when you tried to put it back on. I cant say for sure what becauise it could be so many things. Id take it back off and give it another go.

Installed new water pump, now have limited power?

HI,

I installed a new water pump assy on a 1993 25hp Johnson. I had a hell of a time trying to get the lower unit back on while keeping the water tube connected.

After I installed it, it idled great and shot out alot of water. I shifted from neutral to forward and reverse and all seemed fine.

Today I took the boat out on a river. We cruised around at no-wake speed and everything was fine. When I tried to get the boat up on plane, the engine just bogged down...almost stalling. If I went back to neutral, I could rev up as high as I wanted.

When I had the boat back on the trailer and still in the water I tried a little experiment. I tried to throttle up in forward and it bogged down. I trottled up in reverse and I hade enough power to pull off the trailer. I'm guessing it has something to with the fact that the prop is pushing into the lower unit in forward.

Everything feels fine, but I'm thinking I did something wrong putting the lower unit back on. Any ideas?

thanks,al

not the lower unit installation itself but the prop?

If you have a spacer on the shaft, make sure it is there and/or is on correctly the right way before you add the prop and tighten up the nut. Otherwise the prop digs into the housing. The friction is enough to limit the engine. (been there) This seems to explain how you still have power in reverse when the prop was thrusting the other way. I did this same thing once.

Thanks for the replies. I might have a few things going on so I'm making another post showing EVERYTHING that I've been having trouble with.

thanks,
Al
