I just bought a replacement fish finder (eagle fishmark 320) to replace my old Eagle Ultra fish finder. My question: Is it simple to install? Just hook it up to the battery and attach the transducer to my trolling motor? I've read somewhere that it's wise to have a professional install it, so it wokrs properly. I also have fish finder on my console. Any advice or recommendations??

Re: Installing a depth finder

BassCat

I installed a Hummingbird fish finder to my boat. It was very easy. The transducer was fitted to the base of the transom in line with the lower edge. You will need to install a low amp in-line fuse in the positive wire feed to the fish finder, 1 amp in my case. That's about it really. The Hummingbird came with excellent instructions including a template for drilling the holes in the hull. The Eagle should be similar.

I was pretty nervous about drilling holes in the hull, but it was a piece of cake. Just start with a very small drill bit and work up. Again the Hummingbird said what bit sizes to use. Put silicone on the threads of the screws to mount it. They should be supplied.

One thing I've learned with all the other holes that I have drilled, is that a hand drill gives me much better results than any sort of power drill. There is much more control and less chance of flaking pieces of the gel coat around the hole.

If you are careful, installing your own kit is the way to go. It gives you an intimate knowledge of whats going on and it's good fun. Personally, I like working on my boat as much as actually boating ( I think!).

Good luck.

Sorry, I should have added that the transducer needs a clear stream of water to work well. If you mount it on or near the motor there may well be too much turbulence for it to work. Fitting it to the transom is the best way to go.

Re: Installing a depth finder

Thanks Andy. I just finished installing mine. This one replaces the bow mount w/ a transducer mounted to my trolling motor. It was super easy. Now I can finally get temps on the front deck. Ah! Life is good.
