We just recently had a garmin 400c depth/fish finder installed on our boat. Not a week later our GPS unit was stolen. now we have replaced it with a Garmin 440. i was thinking that the transducer for the 400 should be compatible so before I wired it I decided to plug in the depth finder cable to the GPS. The GPS worked, but it would not read the depth. I haven't had a chance to mess with it but I figured I would see if anyone had any info for me.

Call Garmin's customer service and they would be able to tell you if it's compatible.

Were you in the water when you tried it? It should work.

Yes I was in the water when I plugged in.

Do you have a Garmin 440 or a 440S? Only the 440S supports a depth finder function.

Re: Installing a Garmin 440

I have the 440. I was under the impression that the only difference between the two was that the s came with a transducer. When I go into the menu function and information there is a place for water depth, but it reads 0.0.
If there is a difference in the unit itself then I will probably just return this one for the s model.

Looking through the manual it appears that the 440 will support a depth finder but you must add a GSD21 or 22 sounder module (page 32) to the unit.

Can you take the Garmin 440 off the boat when your not using it? I'd like to get one too.
