I have a 1992 Maxum which has the 3.0l mercruiser alpha one lx. The boat never came with a tachometer so I am looking to put one in. Is there any specific tachometer I need to buy or will pretty much anything work? Also, since there is no space for the tachometer in the cluster, would you recommend simply replacing the speedometer or finding some sort of external tachometer?

Re: Installing a tachometer

There is No Place at all to add one ah ? Well..its your choice if you want to Pull the speedo to install the tach. The wiring is very simple, ( red ) Positive to Ign Positive( key on ), ( Black )Ground to ground, and the Third wire sometimes is Green ( Tach wire ) this one would go to the Negative ( - ) side of the coil, that should be it ...

There's always room for a tach. just surface mount if you have to, I've never seen a power boat that didn't have one. your tach selection is endless and there's really nothing special about it although I would look for one built from plastic or stainlesss so it won't corrode, also give it some rubber mounting for shock resistance. 12v+ feed, neg. side of coil for signal and a good ground, most all of them have a light for nightime.
