Installing a Wakeboard Tower next to Gas Cap

I'm looking at installing a new wakeboard tower, but my gas cap on my 87 Ebbtide Riviera is right at the front of the base of the passenger side windshield. How close can I get to that without weakening it?

right beside it......but your backing plate must be long enough to take the stress....

understand you WILL crack the gellcoat after a while

you can also add glass underneath to take stress

Because I'm a crazy old coot, I would ground the tower if it is metal. Don't want no static sparks near that fuel inlet.
