OK I need an answer soon. I finish the floor of the boat with my epoxy/glass. I bought 6'x25' of carpet and glue. My Pedestals have arrived. The seats will be here next week. I and going to mount my pedestals on 1/2 inch plwood boards with Tee Nuts or T-Nuts. Then mount the board to my new floor so no cutting or such to my floor.
Since both ends will be supported either by the hull or stringer it should be strong enough.

I can find the T-nuts under the carpet with a magnet.

How exactly do I treat the carpet under the pedestals?
Do I lay the carpet and cut holes to match the pedistals or do I just screw in the pedestals with the carpet layed in?

Re: Installing carpet

I would cut the carpet to match the pedestals and seal the pedestals to the floor. I did this to my bass boat five years ago. No problems yet.

Re: Installing carpet

I would not leave any carpet under the pedestal, makes any fasteners impossible to seal and also will prevent the pedestal from getting a good solid mount.....imho.. :D

Re: Installing carpet

I an not worried about sealing the fastners at all.
The Fastenter well be mounted in a 1/2 plywood square. This square will be epoxy coated with 2 coats on all edges.
Then a bolt can be screwed into a T-Nut but a bolt will not touch the actual floor already sealed. The Plywood square will be attached to the floor with epoxy.

So it seems NOT to place the base on carpet. OK.

Re: Installing carpet

My thinking is remove the carpet squares and get a good seal to the floor like llfish suggests. You don’t need anything that will wick and hold moisture against the wood, even if it is epoxy sealed. Stuff grows, carpet rots, etc. Also, I’d give a little thought to (1) sealing the bolts that hold the pedestals in place to keep water from sneaking down the bolt and between the threads of the t-nuts. And epoxy seal the inside if the holes in the plywood, too. Don’t want water getting into your wood bases that way. (2) Carpet over the 1/2 plywood bases to match the floor. :)

Realgun,
When your ready to bolt your seat pedestal down put some RTV silicone sealant on the bolt threads and into the T nuts.
You will seal the bolt from water and likely rust attack but you will still be able to remove the fasteners later if you need to..

Peter

peterf,
Good Idea bout that silacone. I was going to seal the nuts to the wood to just to be sure so If water did get in then the wood would still be safe.
