Installing CD Player in Bayliner

Trying to install a Sony CD player into my '01 Bayliner- stereo is brand new and works but when I hook it up, nothing.

Old stereo (with boat when I bought) had same problem. I don't think it is the stereo, it seems like a power supply issue- fuses are fine, and yellow power from stereo seem to go to one red power wire on boat and black stereo ground seems to go to yellow ground on boat.

Anyone else have a similar deal? Novice boater (and obvously, electrician, too), just curious...

Re: Installing CD Player in Bayliner

People have a tendency to want to ground one side of each speaker. On most stereos built in the last 30 years or so, that's a "no-no". There is a positive and negative connection on the stereo for each speaker. The pair of wires for each speaker must be connected to the correct + and - terminals on the head unit. There is generally one lead that powers a power antenna when the switch is turned on, there is another wire that gets connected to +12V that is on all the time. This is the station memory and clock function. Then there is the +12V line that actually powers the unit, as well as a unit "chassis ground" -- it's that wire that gets connected to ground. Without a diagram of your situation we have no idea whether you have one, two, or four speakers, a gazillion watt amp, or whether your cd player is built into the head unit or whether you are trying to install a separate unit.

Re: Installing CD Player in Bayliner

Thanks, The boat has four speakers already installed, no amp and the CD player is the head unit.

The unit has two wires for each speaker but I only hooked up one per- would that account for no power to the unit at all?

The unit has a 'memory/ auto antenna' wire that has a plug w/ sleeve (horrible description, I know) that I did not hook up b/c it didn't appear to have a corresponding wire coming from the boat...

Thanks again,
John

You must hook up the other wire from each speaker to the player. That would be your problem..And the Antenna wire is for a power antenna. Disregard that one unless of course, you have a power antenna..

I'll assume that you have verified that you do indeed have + 12 on the supply wire, and, continuity on the ground.

As long as your speakers are correctly wired (proper polarity, and,no "floating ground..),make sure you have connected the antennae wire(not the power antennae lead..),to the head unit.

Every head unit I have ever installed will not turn on without the antennae being connected.
