I have read and talked enough now to realize I must install a water fuel separator on my 19ft Sea Pro Skiff (90hp Johnson outboard) if I continue to buy fuel at the local gas station because of ethanol. I plan on installing a Moeller clear view water / fuel separator (with drain) and have read you can install it below deck, and have also read you must install above deck (USCG regs). I tried to go online and search the USCG regs and could not find any info on their website. I don't have room above deck and was wondering if anyone can think of a reason why I can't put below deck ??

Thanks
RB

Having the same boat once upon a time I installed mine on the transom (inboard). Easy changing and draining I feel are important in your decision.

Never heard of such a rule, but the accesability part is important, anything mounted down below also tends to get more moisture/humidity than in the air, put it where you can, as not having one is worse.

If the filter is all metal you can put it where ever you want. But according to ABYC regs and coast guard regs if it has a plastic bowl on a stern drive it must be above deck. On an outboard it it must be below deck providing you have proper ventilation. This is mainly a fire hazard thing. Go to Trailerboats.com Jan 2010 (page 38) issue. I never heard of this myself until I read the artical. Been putting them myself for years where you could get at them easy. O'well thats government for you.

Thanks for all the info Guys...........I have received my filter in the mail
and will install this week. Found a spot below deck and should have enough
ventilation. I have 4 rod holder tubes that are close to the stern area that are open to below deck. :)

I read somewhere that the fuel filter water separator should not be more than 3' or so bellow the motor (outboard)...maybe it has something to do with the fuel delivery...or feed.Mine is a Parker by Racor made for Honda...and i think i read that on their site.Did your come with special claps...can you please post a picture ?
Thank you,
Dan

All Federal Regulations can be found at 33 CFR part 183 (Code of Federal Regulations, Title 33)

? 183.570Fuel filters and strainers: Installation. Each fuel filter and strainer must be supported on the engine or boat structure independent from its fuel line connections, unless the fuel filter or strainer is inside a fuel tank.

I think mounting it on the inboard side of the transom is a good idea, makes for easy access for draining (can be seen easy) and filter replacement.
