Installing Gearbox on 1998 Force 120 HP

Only had boat a short time . Removed gear housing to replace impeller on water pump Now I am having a problem shifting gear box to forward gear and pushing it back up into leg. The shift rod seems to turn only one way but after installed it dosen't shift into neutral or another gear. Should the shifting rod turn to make prop turn in both directions? Does it need a little force? Thanks

TO REINSTALL THE LOWER UNIT SPLINE LINE UP ON MAIN SHAFT ENGAUGE THE SHIFT ROD SO YOU CAN TURN THE PROP SO CENTER SHAFT WILL ALSO TURN .PUSH ROD HAS TO BE READJUSTED TURN IT COUNTERCLOCKWISE

Thanks but<br />I just want to be sure of what your saying before I reassemble. I have the remote in forward gear the shift shaft turned so that when the prop is turned the main shaft is turning to the left as I'm facing it from the rear. Is this right or am I going in the wrong direction.
