Think I'm going with the GArmin 421s Gps/finder. I have always used transom mount ducers in the past but they always seem to get fouled no matter what I put on them. I want to try an in hull this time but not sure about installation. Antifreeze, mineral oil creating a chamber all seem too involved. I am only looking to get depth and contour while trolling / drifting, don't care about temp or marking fish. Is my hull cored? Can I use the adjustable puck ducer and 5200 and be done rather than creating a mineral oil chamber? ANy advice appreciated.

If your hull is cored you need to cut through the inner layer of the hull and core and remove them. The transducer needs to be mounted directly against the outer hull.

Any transducer that requires a "chamber" for mineral oil or similar should have the mounting hardware so it is not an issue. Usually you will glue the mount piece to the hull, fill it up with the mineral oil and the transducer will screw into that piece. The transducer will have an O-Ring to make a seal so the mineral oil does not leak out. In most cases the transducer mounts using a 1/4 turn click or something like that. The hardest part of the installation is determining your hull angle so you can glue the mount with the correct orientation so the transducer is parallel to the "ground" and not the hull.

I have used this transducer in both my Four Winns. Works ok but as you said no temp. It does flash depth more than I would like. The factory thru hull does the same from time to time. No mess with the anti-freeze if the mount is sealed properly. I am going to try mineral oil some time. Airmar recommends using silicone. This is easy to remove. Think twice before using 5200.
