Hello, Installing an intake on a Mercruiser 260/ GM 350 SB. Mercruiser Service manual #3 says to put perma-seal on the heads, install the gasket, manifold and bolts, and then torque. The Fel-Pro gaskets I have say to put just a dab here and there to hold them in place while installing. So what is it? This is the last thing I'm doing to this boat before it goes to the shop. I started a thread a couple of weeks ago because of a vacuum gauge reading of 10". I've checked everything else, and the only thing I can come up with is a leak, hence the manifold coming off. The existing gaskets looked like there could have been a leak at the #6 port, and there was also oil getting past both gaskets at the heat risers. But my question is, with the Fel-pro blue teflon gaskets, do I need to coat anything with perma seal besides the bolt threads? Should I put it around just the heat riser ports and/or the water ports?

Speaking as a mechanic with over 40 years under my belt I would say to follow the gasket manufacturers instructions. Having said that I dont like Fe-pro intake gaskets, too hard, I much prefer Victor, they seal better if things arent quite perfect.

SM #17 says to use Perfect Seal around the coolant passages (both sides). RTV sealer replaces the gaskets at the front and back.

Follow the gasket manufactures recommendations. The gaskets may be different from what Merc used in the 80's when they wrote the manual

Did you confirm the flatness of the manifold sealing surfaces with a feeler gauge and straight edge? Is it cleaned properly? Else, go with the gasket maker instructions. Use RTV black for the front and back of the manifold in a nice thick bead instead of the rubber inserts (if provided). You can use some RTV around the water ports, just don't go crazy... a thin film will do fine.
