I have a Mec. 9.8 1965. I had to remove the exhaust plate because it was plugged and the motor would not pee

I am going to install new gaskets on the baffle plate to exhaust and cylinder block to baffle plate.. Should I use some type of gasket cement also need to install the gasket to the bottom cowl. I am not a mechanic what else do I need to know to apply these gaskets. When I put the bolts in do I need to put any thing on them first. When I removed the bolts I broke 3 of them, had to drill out and I taped one with a 6mm tap.

Thinks for the information

Most gaskets do not need sealer and sealer can cause damage to the gasket if too much torque is applied. I never needed it on my 40 HP and the new sierra gaskets never leaked. You can use some on the base gasket if your chenging that just don,t over do the tighteng and check it periodicaly for loosening. I had a bad surface on my 70 and had no choice but to use sealer. If you have a manual it should indicate weather or not to use sealer on your size engine. JMO

Like Max sez, sealer is not required, a small smear, like a few dots, of contact cement like bellows adhesive can be helpful to hold things in place during assy.

The biggest problem with sealants is most use too much and assemble while it is too wet and slippery, as the surfaces come together the gasket can squish out, like a soft tiddly-wink, and tear, leaving you with a leak.

If you use anything, smear it out as thin as possible, almost like it isn't even there, hang the gasket on a nail and let it air dry until it is NOT slick, then assemble.

Remember to tighten bolts in a pattern, inside out, etc, and those 1/4 - 20's don't get torqued down much, Inches, not pounds.

Don't use any sealants or adhesive. Important to clean the gasket surfaces real smooth first ...600 grit paper and wipe clean with rubbing alcohol. Bolts don't have to be tightened too tightly .... important to alternate on tightening so as to keep plates as level as possible....hand tight plus a bit .....
