Well, maybe those Mercury Racing 1200hp stern drives are direct too.

OMC stringer the only i/o I can think of that uses solid spline coupler.
Oh wait - is the TR/TRS solid on the trans output? maybe

Yes it is (1200hp), how long do you think it will last?
Well I donno. I'll bet they last considerably longer than the "One run then rebuild-it" dragster engines.

Getting a lot of HP out of an engine means nothing if it will only do it for a few 1/4 mile runs then scatter internal parts all over the track....
Those off shore racing boats don't typically blow up during the race and the races usually last a little longer than 6 seconds......So I'd say that they probably last quite a while.

Dragster engines? You are correct. Boat engines keep their rpms down to a reasonable limit whereas on the strip they wind them till they blow. I was referring to the strength of the bottom end. Fords 800hp 2 liter was built for 24 hour racing, it had a beefy bottom end like the 460 has a big beefy bottom end, for their respective sizes.

I have a project I'm just starting using an 806 cu in stroker kit for a 460. Operating parameters I'm building to are 3800-4200 max rpm, peak torque at around 2500 to 2800, cruise at approx 2200rpm. A far cry from dragster operating ranges. I'm building this thing for max torque and not so much for max horsepower.

WHY? Well my future wife says I'm nuts and have to much time on my hands, if that's any indication. :D:D:D

Re: Installing OMC460 King Cobra

Wow, this thread did go a bit astray, but hey, we all have our own problems. My main reason for wanting a big block is the torque also. I want to get up on plane easily, and stay there with fairly low RPM's. No need for a dragster "mountain motor" here.
So, the coupler on my King Cobra is metal, and I gather Merc's are rubber? See you learn something every day.
Rick, again, thanks for sharing your experience and knowledge. When I start the swap, if I run into parts problems I'll PM you first and see what you have.
JCF350, glad to hear there's someone out there extolling the virtues of the motor I'm committed to here. Hopefully I'll be the beneficiary of it's strong points more than it's bad.
Bondo, that's where you come in. I can hardly wait to come back here with a problem, looking for help, and getting a healthy dose of I told you so. But hey, I guess I'm asking for it.

So anyway, what oil should I use?

Nope, they are both rubber, just different bolt pattern and shape for the 460 coupler.

Sorry for engaging in thread drifting!!!
I thought we were "done" here too!!

Shhhhhh.......be vewy vewy quiet!

My 1987 Owners manual says to use OMC Cobra SAE 30 4-cycle motor oil (API SF-SE/CC)

Since you won't find that.

It would NEVER be bad to use Merc's 25W40 or ANY FC-W marine (click!!) type oil but it's pretty expensive and probably won't be worth it Just Use any SAE 30 oil. That's a flat tappet engine so using a diesel rated 30wt oil will like Shell Rotella T, Mobil Delvac 1300, Chevron Delo 30 etc etc will still have the anti-wear additives (albeit temporarily) that is still needed by older flat tappet engines.

Oh gawd.. <Don Please forgive me!!>...now I have gone and done it! It's an oil thread now..... We're ALL lost!

Cheers,

Rick

You know the good thing about oil threads?

(what did he say Virginia? There's something good about oil threads?)

It doesn't matter what forum (Boat, cars, trucks, airplanes, go-karts, model airplanes, lawn edgers etc ad nauseum!!!) you go to and ask about oil....

You ALWAYS get the same answers!!

I just LOVE the internet!

And then some enterprising Forum Moderator puts a permanent locked sticky up at the top (to reduce the oil threads.......AND NO ONE READS IT!!!)

Getting in trouble for oil threads? Sounds like something that might happen on xxx , but what do I know.

Start a thread with the title something like, "Is it better to use synthetic oil, 10w30 or straight 40W in my xxx". See what answers you get and then you'll know why. Opinions are like axxhxxxx, everybody's got one.
