can you install a tach on older boat motors that never had a tach on it? how do you know which tach to buy for your size motor or does all the tachs adjust to any size motor? also does it have to be a outboard tach or will a car tach work?

A car tach will not work, no way no how.

The tachometer requires a reference signal from something electrical, could be a distributor, alternator or generator etc. Does your motor have a charging system?

Some tachs are inductive, they get their signal from the spark plug wires ('TinyTach' is inductive).

If you post specific details of the motor, one of the Johnson/evinrude gurus will be along to help.

Aldo

Re: Installing Tach on older motor

Just follow the directions included with the tach - it's not too hard. I picked up a Teleflex tach on eBay for $40 including shipping.

I just jury-rigged the tach on my '75 70HP on my vacation. The terminal strip on the EV is imprinted with what color wires go where. It should be the same as mine, which is the 3rd screw from the top, which is bridged with the 4th screw. That is your sender. I took a piece of power cord from a vacuum cleaner (did I say jury rigged?), used one lead for the signal, and the other for ground (direct to the engine), & ran it forward and connected to the appropriate terminals on the tach. I then took another piece of wire and a cigarette ligher plug & used that to get power to the tach by hooking it up to the IGN terminal. You must remember to disconnect from the receptacle after shutting down or you will drain the battery.

This worked like a charm. I did this to do some prop diagnostics by swapping props. I will eventually do a proper installation - I just didn't want to get involved in pulling apart my engine controller to get into the ignition switch!

I'll do the proper install with properly run wiring over the winter.

Never dealt with Force engines, but it can't be that different - pick up a good engine repair manual with electrical diagrams & you should be fine!

That looks to be the TinyTach. I have one & they work great. If you wonder what one to get give them a call and ask to talk to someone to get help getting the correct one. When I called I was going to get the one that reads the signal off one plug wire. I told them what I had (1989 Johnson 50 hp, 2 cyl) and he suggested I get the tach that picks up 2 pulses and I connect to both plug wires. He said there was less of a chance for interference.
