Was thinking of installing temp gauge on my motor. it is a 96 112 spl and only has temp alarm. Just went through power head rebuild what looks like due to faulty thermostats and alarm horn. new temp sensors and alarm now, but was thinking i'd like to have a gauge to monitor temp. have some blank holes on dash. good idea or not? thanks, joe

Re: installing temp gauge?

Temperature gauge with a sender on each head and a switch to toggle between sides is a good idea. If you have the space, also add a water pressure gauge. The two gauges will keep you informed as to engine cooling. Just because you have water pressure does not mean the engine is cooling properly so both gauges serve a valuable purpose.

Re: installing temp gauge?

lets us know what sender unit you get... I bet your block is like mine( 97 90 hp) and I am trying to figure what sender to buy to mate up with my OMC temp gauge.

they have lots of different senders and they have to mate up with your gauge i understand..

at the least i can buy a set up like you get and just replace my gauge..

they have different ohms ratings...

"the little things with these motors and boat can kill ya"

you just dont know something ...UNTIL you know learn it some how!!!!

good luck

Re: installing temp gauge?

When I got my guage they said there are 2 different senders for different heat ranges, I went with the higher one, it starts around 120f and goes up to 220 or so. It depends on the heat range of your guage I guess.

For the wiring, I stole the trim guage wiring as I don't use a trim guage, that saved me having to run more wire.

Snip it just before it goes into the red plug then pick it up at the controller end.

You can make an "L" bracket to hold the tip of the sender flat against the head. Use head cover plate bolt to hold the bracket in place. As Silvertip suggested, you really need two-one for each head. I only have it on one head-that's why I also run a water pressure gauge.
