Re: installing the deck in my 78 starcraft
Not to steal the thread, but I have some related questions....
Tashasdaddy - I'm finalizing the plan for my floor as well ('79 Starcraft). Under 2 (yes, 2) layers of flooring, there was a vinyl-covered sheet of sawdust - the original floor. Obviously, non-treated plywood didn't hold up. Has it been your experience that when properly cared for, "entombing" the floor in fiberglass isn't worth the cost and work (for aluminum boats)?
I realize that a little care during ownership (covering the boat after drying, sealing any new floor penetrations, etc) makes a huge difference, maybe more than materials.
My plan was to add grills to the floor (under the bow seats) and a ski locker to help keep everything dry after use, and to keep the boat covered (with good ventilation).
Would a coat of paint (or rubber paint) be enough to seal the floor?
Without the added strength from the fiberglass coating, what thickness plywood would we use?
