I'm installing the lower unit on my 1985 140 hp with an extra long shaft (25").
I'm confused with the length of the shift rod and the direction of the off set in the shift rod. What should the length be from the flat surface on the L/U to the center of the hole at the top of the shift rod? Also, does the off set face towards the front or the rear of the boat?
Thanks

The angle of the shift rod faces forward. Measurement is taken from the top surface of the lower unit (next to the shift rod cover plate) to the center of the shift rod hole with the unit in neutral. Measurements follow:

1985 - 120, 140hp Loop Charged = (L) 21-15/16" - - (XL) 26-15/16" plus/minus 1/32". Have shift rod in neutral.

Thanks Joe,
I believe I have to add 5" to the 21 15/16" dimention for the extra long shaft?

Glad you picked up on that typo. I corrected it as above.

Joe, What should be the clearence or end play be between the pinion gear in the lower unit and the thrust bearing that is located under the water pump and locking collar with four bolts? Thanks again

There's a special tool for that measurement. Unfortunately since retiring, I sold mine and do not recall anything about it. Unless you've changed the pinion gear, I wouldn't be concerned about it. But even if you did change the gears, you'll be pretty safe using the same amount of shims. I know of many boaters who have done just that without encountering problems. If in doubt, have a certified mechanic with the proper tool set it up for you.
