Installing tow eye

I've would like to install a tow eye on the transom above the swim platform. Is there anything special I need to do for drilling through the gelcoat/fiberglass? Also should I worry about water being able to seep into any small, unnoticable gaps even if it looks like the eye is flush against the transom? Last question is what is the recommended backing material and size? The backing will be in a small storage area in the transom and out of view. Thanks.<br />Travis

Hi Travis. The eye that you buy should come with a backing plate, but if you have the room and you want to use something beefier it wouldn't hurt. To drill through the glass, what I do is cover the intended hole site with painters masking tape before you start to drill to prevent chipping. Don't use duct tape or electrical tape or something, only masking tape. Drill a small pilot hole first then use the correct size (sharp) bit. You will want to seal the holes with a compound like 3-M 5200 to waterproof it. Remember, measure twice, drill once. Good luck.
